Thank you for helping to spread the word about the City’s community feedback survey regarding potential locations for a permanent place of remembrance. Community input is critical, and we encourage those impacted by the shooting, as well as those working to support community resiliency, to take about 10-15 minutes to complete the survey. Feedback from the survey will help inform the working group’s report to the City Council. Links to the survey in English, Spanish, Russian, and Polish are available at hpremembrance.org/survey.
Please use the resources on this page to share information about the survey with your stakeholders and constituents, and please also encourage staff members who have been involved in the shooting response to complete the survey. Thank you again for your support!

The City of Highland Park is undertaking a trauma-informed planning process to create a permanent place of remembrance that will pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Highland Park shooting, create a space(s) for reflection, remembrance, and solace, and honor the community’s resilience, especially those who were injured. As part of the planning process, the City seeks community feedback on three potential locations for the permanent place of remembrance:
Port Clinton Plaza
Rose Garden adjacent to City Hall
Southwest corner of Central Ave. & St. Johns Ave.
A survey with guided and open-ended questions regarding these potential locations and the future permanent place of remembrance is available at hpremembrance.org/survey. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Russian, and Polish, and will be open through January 31, 2025.
Survey responses are anonymous, and open-ended responses will be provided to the working group planning for a permanent place of remembrance and City Council in their entirety. Please do not complete the survey more than once.

Yes. If you choose to provide your email address during the survey to receive project updates, the consultant will remove your email address from your survey responses before providing those separately to the City.

At this time, we are not seeking additional locations. The working group planning for a permanent place of remembrance considered a long list of potential locations recommended by elected officials, staff, and community members before narrowing it down to this shortlist. The City Council will make the final decision regarding the location of the permanent place of remembrance. Your feedback will help inform their discussion, along with information from the working group.
The City’s communications guidance is a reference document to help facilitate compassionate and trauma-informed communication about the Highland Park shooting. The guidance encourages those who are speaking or writing about the shooting to consider common words, phrases, or images that may inadvertently cause retraumatization for some.
The guidance is informed by recommendations from experts at the Department of Justice - Office of Victims of Crime, mental health clinicians, and extensive research. It includes an introduction to best practices, suggestions for trauma-informed substitutions for common phrases, and reference articles on relevant topics. The City maintains the guidance as a living document, and the information is periodically updated to reflect new recommendations or feedback from people impacted by the shooting and the community as a whole.
