Temporary Memorial

We Remember

On July 4, 2022, Highland Park endured incomprehensible tragedy. We honor the memory of the seven precious lives taken and hold them forever in our hearts. These beloved members of our community are remembered at the temporary memorial at the Rose Garden with words shared by their families:

Katie Goldstein
“Love of my life” to one. “Best mom in the world” to two. “My best friend” to many.

Irina McCarthy
I carry your heart with me…

Kevin Michael McCarthy
Memories are pictures taken through the years…pictures of a smiling face, a happy time, a favorite place – These treasures time cannot erase are kept as souvenirs. They soothe our hearts.

Stephen Straus
A good man who exuded humor, kindness and warmth and made the world a better place. Adored by his family, friends and community. Rest in Peace.

Jacki Lovi Sundheim
Loving wife, mother, sister and aunt.

Nicolás Toledo
The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid? When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Psalms 27: 1-3

Eduardo Uvaldo
Loving husband, father and grandfather. Our love goes with you, and our souls wait to join you.

Temporary Memorial

The temporary memorial, located adjacent to City Hall (1707 St. Johns Avenue) at Highland Park’s historic Rose Garden, was established in November, 2022 as a quiet, contemplative space for reflection, remembrance, and respite until a permanent place of remembrance is established.

The temporary memorial includes seven plaques designed in partnership with family members. Bench seating is available within the Garden. An ADA-accessible, all-seasons walkway extends from the sidewalk along St. Johns Avenue to the Garden.

Nearby parking is available in the Hazel Avenue parking lot located at the intersection of St. Johns and Hazel Avenue parking lots, in the Metra lot on the west side of St. Johns Avenue just opposite City Hall, and in the parking deck located at the intersection of St. Johns and Laurel Avenues. Limited street parking is also available in the vicinity.

In addition to the temporary memorial, two plaques remembering those whose lives were taken are located at the southwest corner of St. Johns and Central Avenues.
